What's Up in Stallion Springs?

The Stallion Springs POA held its annual "Meet, Greet, and Eat" picnic at Horse Thief Park on Saturday, Aug. 23. Over 70 local residents attended for a relaxing evening of talk, hotdogs, watermelon, cookies and drinks. The 4H club showed off their sheep, rabbits and chickens to the group.

The Stallion Springs Board of Directors held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday Aug. 19 at the CSD. The board approved the Execution of the Water Shortage Contingency Plan declaring a Stage 2 Emergency. General Manager, Mary Bath Garrison noted that Stallion Springs has done well so far in conserving but more will be known after the August meter readings at the end of the month. She displayed a door hanger that will be used as a first notice to violators.

Police Report

The Police department reported two arrests, 12 citations were issued, 62 reports taken, 113 calls for service and 84 officer initiated investigations, in the month of July.

Stallion Springs residents continue to report "Demand for Payment" phone scams from unknown subjects. The SSPD advises its citizens to ignore these types of calls, inform the phone company, and report these incidents via email at: http://www.mysscsd.com .

The SSPD will be actively enforcing distracted driving laws during the month of Sept. Stay off the cell phone or it could be costly.

CERT Training

Wednesday, Aug. 20, Mark Rodriquez, Process Safety Management Coordinator and Robert Wegis, Regulatory Compliance Manager of Grimmway Farms gave a training session to 26 members of the Stallion Springs and Bear Valley CERT teams on chemicals used in farming in the Cummings Valley.

Rodriquez noted that Anhydrous Ammonia is one of the most commonly produced chemical in the United States. It is used as a household cleaner, fertilizer, and refrigerant. It exists naturally in humans and in the environment. Grimmway uses it as a refrigerant to keep produce fresh.

In the event of a release the area would be kept isolated and only properly equipped emergency personnel would be allowed to enter. Anhydrous Ammonia seeks out water and would dissipate quickly posing minimal danger unless you were right at the leak. Approximately 1000 gallons of the chemical are stored in the valley.

Wegis said that the Grimmway crops in the valley are all organic and the most common fertilizer used here is fish emulsion which poses no danger. Gypsum is used to break up the soil to aid in water absorption. Approximately 80 trucks per day leave the barn carrying fresh vegetables.
